Brain and Tissue Banking
In 2015, A Brain and Tissue Biorepository was established at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, under the direction of the NDRD Program, headed by Dr. Maria Escolar. Dr. Julia Kofler is the head pathologist and director of the Alzheimer’s Bank at University of Pittsburgh where Krabbe brain and tissue samples are kept.
The Brain and Tissue Biorepository is currently expanding from handling Krabbe samples, to other leukodystrophies in order to advance the research and scientific findings for these diseases.
In September of 2016, Partners For Krabbe Research donated $10,000 to the Children's Foundation for Neurodegenerative Disorders (CFND) which is under the direction of Dr. Maria Escolar. These donated funds will be used to support the Biorepository Brain and Tissue Bank for research of Krabbe Disease.
In May of 2017, a check in the amount of $10,000 was granted to Dr. Escolar to be used for Krabbe research for the NDRD Brain and Tissue Bank at UPMC in Pittsburgh Pennsylvania.
